Community Engaged Leader Certificate
The Community Engaged Leader Certificate provided by Leadership and Community Engagement allows eligible students to purposefully and meaningfully connect with the campus, local, national, and global community through completing events and engaging in opportunities around leadership, alternative breaks, local service, and civic engagement.
About the Community Engaged Leader Certificate
Leadership and Community Engagement is excited to launch the Community Engaged Leader Certificate. This choose your own adventure and timeline certificate provides an opportunity for Ohio State students to engage in the campus community and beyond. Throughout the year, eligible students earn points by participating in qualifying Leadership and Community Engagement events. Qualifying events range from one hour drop in virtual workshops to entire year long application based commitments. The Community Engaged Leader Certificate provides eligible students with the opportunity to earn experience and a credential in leadership and community engagement by choosing eligible events that meet their needs, interests, and lifestyle.
Completing the Community Engaged Leader Certificate
Qualifying Events and Points
Students pursuing the Community Engaged Leader Certificate must complete 100 points worth of qualifying events from the Office of Student Life's Leadership and Community Engagement within one calendar year (July 1 though June 30). Within the 100 points, students must complete at least one community and civic engagement designated and at least one leadership designated event to qualify for the certificate.
50 Points - Cohort or Board Member
As a part of the Office of Student Life, the Buck-I-SERV Board serves to support the alternative break program. Becoming a board member is an application based processes with a year-long commitment.
Pay It Forward Cohort Member*^
Members of the Pay It Forward cohort are provided with opportunities to plan service experiences, develop as leaders and form meaningful relationships with peers who are committed to giving back to our community. Becoming a cohort member is an application based process with a year-long commitment.
40 Points - Nonprofit Immersion Program or Buck-I-SERV Leader
Nonprofit Immersion Program Participant*^
The Nonprofit Immersion Program (NPIP) is a cohort of students who are paired with nonprofit organizations in Columbus. Students meet regularly with their local nonprofit partner and serve as non-voting members of the organizations' board for one year, during which time they learn about the inner workings of a nonprofit. Becoming a NPIP participant is an application based processes with a year-long commitment.
As a Buck-I-SERV trip leader, students can expect to learn invaluable and transferable skills, coordinate trip logistics, engage in education and reflection, actively participate in all pre- and post-trip meetings and receive a discount on their participant fee. Becoming a Buck-I-SERV trip leader is an application based process with three cycles per year.
35 Points - Buck-I-SERV Participant or Semester of Service
Buck-I-SERV is an exciting opportunity for students at all levels to travel, learn and serve through unique, week-long group service experiences connecting students with community-identified needs across the country and internationally. Becoming a Buck-I-SERV trip participant is an application based process with three cycles per year.
Semester of Service is a leadership and service program that matches Ohio State students with local nonprofit organizations, where they serve on a weekly basis throughout the course of a semester and participate in an educational curriculum to help prepare them to act as servant leaders in the Columbus community. Exploring Columbus Through Service and Leadership Participant*
Leadership and Community Engagement is excited to present Exploring Columbus Through Service and Leadership (ECTSL), an immersive volunteer experience, during fall break which offers three full days of direct, hands-on community service with local agencies and nonprofit organizations as well as continuous leadership development and three engaging excursions around Central Ohio. Becoming a ECTSL participant is an application based process with a full-time commitment during fall break.
LeaderShape challenges participants to lead with integrity while working towards a vision grounded in their deepest values and exploring not only what they want to do, but who they want to be. Becoming a LeaderShape participant is an application based process with a week-long commitment over winter break.
25 Points - Single Day of Service Site Leader
Community Commitment Site Leader*^
Site Leaders are students who volunteer to serve as peer leaders and liaisons for the Community Commitment team for the day of the event and they help to ensure a successful service engagement by reaching out to the Community Commitment team in the event of any troubleshooting needs and provide energy and enthusiasm to fellow students for the day of service. Becoming a Community Commitment site leader is an application based process occuring at the begining of fall semester.
MLK Jr. Day of Service Site Leader*^

Community Commitment Participant*
Whether students volunteer together with a student organization, a group of friends or want to get involved individually, all undergraduate, graduate and professional students are invited to join Pay It Forward as we ring in the new academic year by giving back to the city of Columbus through a morning of community service where students will have the opportunity to participate in 2-3 hours of community service with a local nonprofit around a variety of community needs. Becoming a Community Commitment participant is a drop-in opportunity occuring at the beginning of fall semester.
MLK Jr. Day of Service Participant*

Throughout the year, Pay It Forward provides smaller scale local service opportunities focusing on various community needs to allow students to gain new experiences and match students to opportunities that they are genuinely passionate about. Becoming a Local Service Trip participant is a sign-up opprotunity occuring throughout the fall and spring semesters.
Battle Against Hunger Participant*
Battle Against Hunger is a month-long observance during November aimed at bringing awareness to issues surrounding food insecurity where students have the opportunity to learn and engage through programs centered on food insecurity, which include service trips, educational programs and a month-long food drive benefitting a local organization. Becoming a Battle Against Hunger participant includes drop-in and sign-up opportunities throughout the month of November.
10 Points - Workshop Attendance

Leaderhsip and Community Engagements' community engagement area occasionally provides workhop opportunities around campus to learn more about community and civic engagement programs. Becoming a Community Engagement workshop attendee includes drop-in and sign-up opportunities occuring through the year.
LEAD Series Workshop Attendee^
LEAD is a series of open workshops available to all Ohio State students beginning their leadership journey, looking to expand their leadership skills, or wanting to connect with others while growing skills that will allow then to succeed in class, in their co-curricular experiences, and in their career path. Becoming a LEAD Series workshop attendee includes sign-up opportunities through the year.
Leadership Week Session Attendee^
Leadership Week is a university-wide collaboration to strengthen the culture of student leadership at Ohio State providing opportunities to strengthen students' leadership abilities in one or several of the leadership themes explored throughout the week. Becoming a Leadership Week session attendee includes drop-in and sign-up opportunities through the designated week.
Join OSU Votes to learn about voter registration, different modes of voting, how to be an informed voter, and other civic engagement topics through interactive workshops which provide participants with the tools needed to be informed voters for both the upcoming general election and future elections. Becoming an OSU Votes workshop attendee include drop-in and sign-up opportunities throughout the year.

Eligibility and Requirements
Students pursuing the Community Engaged Leader Certificate must complete 100 points worth of qualifying events from the Office of Student Life's Leadership and Community Engagement within one calendar year (July 1 though June 30). Students should confirm their eligibility for the certificate, then complete the steps below to become a community engaged leader.
Confirm Eligibility
Students must be currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students on the Columbus campus for the diration of their certificate completion. If students will be graduating within the calendar year, they must complete the certificate prior to their graduation date.
Attend Qualifying Events
Check the information above and the Leadership and Community Engagement website for qualifying events. For any wokshop attendance or tabling engagement events, student must sign-in at the event.
Submit Event Reflections
Within one week of attending a qualifying event, students must submit their event reflections through this form. Students must be signed-in with their Ohio State credentials to access the form. Please complete the form in its entirety, and you will receive a confirmation email once the form has been submitted.
Track Points and Repeat
Students are encouraged to track their own points while completing the certificate. For each qualifying event attended, students must complete the reflection form. Students are welcome to repeat qualifying events as well.
Become a Community Engaged Leader
Once a student has completed all the qualifying events and necessary steps to receive 100 points, Leadership and Community Engagement will send a digital certificate to the student via email. If students do not receive their certificate within two weeks of submitting their final reflection form, please contact Leadership and Community Engagement at sl-lead@osu.edu.
Reflections for qualifying events must be submitted through the Community Engaged Leader Certificate Reflection Form in order to earn points towards the certificate. Please review the information above before completing the form.
