Kyla Hurns

  • Title: Belonging & Community Impact Award; Dean's Leadership Award

A senior Public Affairs major from Detroit, Kyla Hurns is a winner of multiple awards this year. As the 2022-2023 Chair of the Undergraduate Black Caucus, her primary focus was on advancing the understanding of belonging, inclusion, social change, and social justice within the campus community. She made a large impact in this role, including establishing the Black Caucus Legislative Issues Committee within the General Assembly, which provided a dedicated platform for Black students to voice their concerns and advocate for change within the legislative branch. She has also advocated for educational equity and pursued this issue through undergraduate research. She plans to continue her passions for social responsibility, civic engagement, and social change after graduation as she moves into her professional career.
